New poll shows Trump defeating DeSantis in potential GOP primary

Former President Trump has a 17-point lead over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (right) in a hypothetical GOP primary, according to a new poll.

AND morning poll released on Wednesday, Trump received 48 percent support among would-be Republican voters, followed by DeSantis at 31 percent support. Trump’s position as leader differs from some polls since the midterm elections in November, which showed DeSantis closing the gap with Trump or leading in some cases.

Former Vice President Mike Pence came in third with 8 percent, followed by former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) with 3 percent. Former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley and Senator Ted Cruz (D-Texas) received 2 percent each.

Support for Trump in Morning Consult polls over the past month has remained between 45 and 50 percent, while DeSantis has hovered around 30 percent.

Among Trump voters, DeSantis ranks second in the latest poll, with 44% supporting the Florida governor. About 20 percent would support Pence and 7 percent would support Cruz.

Just over a third of DeSantis supporters would vote for Trump as the second choice, while 14 percent would support Pence and 13 percent would support Haley.

Opinion polls have found that Trump’s sympathy rating among would-be Republican voters has improved over the past month, with 77 percent viewing him favorably. Trump’s net favor rating, obtained by subtracting the percentage of those who view him unfavorably from the percentage who view him favorably, topped 50 percent for the first time in almost a month in a Morning Consult poll.

Nearly 7 out of 10 potential voters have a positive view of DeSantis.

DeSantis has an advantage among potential voters who are negative about each of them. Only 11 percent said they had a negative view of DeSantis, while 23 percent said they had a negative view of Trump.

The poll did show that DeSantis would perform somewhat better against President Biden in a hypothetical general election matchup than Trump. DeSantis led Biden by 3 points, 44 percent to 41 percent, and Biden led Trump by 3 points, 43 percent to 40 percent.

Opinion polls showed that two-thirds or more of respondents said they had not heard anything about other potential candidates recently.

Trump became the first major Republican nominee to enter the race in November, but several other prominent Republicans have said they are considering running. DeSantis has not made public statements, but has been the subject of significant speculation related to presidential ambitions.

The poll was conducted from January 13 to 15 among 829 potential Republican voters. The margin of error was 4 percentage points.
