New Moderate Party Line Works on New York Democrat Relief Scheme

Efforts are underway to create a “Moderate Party” in New York state and elsewhere as part of a scheme to help Democrats who were punished in last year’s midterms for what critics say are left-wing and soft on criminal politics, The Post has learned. .

One of the organizers of the campaign to form a new party is Dan Cantor, founder and former director of the Working Families Party, which has been accused of pushing Democrats too far to the left and is currently fighting the more moderate Democrat New York Mayor Eric. Adams program.

The campaign to put the Moderate Party on the ballot in the 2024 presidential election is being portrayed as an attempt to sway centrist voters, disgusted by the polarization of the two main parties, to support more like-minded people.

“It’s cynical,” a source familiar with the plan told The Post. “Democrats can’t be everything to everyone”

In such a “combined” vote, a Republican or Democratic candidate for president, governor, or legislature could hypothetically seek to support more centrist policies that would be cross-approved by the Moderate Party and would also run in its electoral line.

New York and Connecticut already allow merger voting, but most other states don’t. A united vote campaign is ongoing in 10 other states, including a legal battle in New Jersey to establish a moderate party voting line.

In New York, the majority of Republican candidates are also supported by the right-wing Conservative Party, which usually receives the third largest number of votes after the Democratic and Republican parties. Many Democrats are cross-supported and also left-wing by the Labor Party, the fourth most voted party.

Candidates can add minor or third party votes to their total score, sometimes resulting in them outscoring others in races.

A new party needs to collect 45,000 voter signatures to qualify for ballot status and receive at least 2% of the total votes in statewide governor and presidential races to keep it in line with legislation passed in 2020. The more onerous demands deprived the Independence Party of the right to vote. , the Green Party and the Libertarian Party.

But in a dizzying development, WFP co-founder and former director Kantor is among those leading the effort to create the Moderate Party, raising accusations of manipulating the ballot to help Democrats rather than genuinely trying to bring politics back to the center.

Centrists have long complained that the WFP is pressuring Democrats to shift to far-left views on taxes and criminal justice policy, and fueling the polarization that the Center Party’s campaign denounces. The WFP has often supported left-wing candidates against moderate actors in Democratic primaries.

While promoting the moderate party campaign, Kantor does not condemn the left WFP. In fact, he calls it a success, said a source familiar with the plan.

“This is ridiculous. This is absurd. This is ridiculous,” the source said.

“These are the people from the Working Families Party who have created this mess. They are trying to deceive people with another party. They think that the voters are so stupid that they will simply vote for a Democrat of another party line.”

The source added: “The reason for creating the Moderate Party is for the Democrats to regain power in Congress. It’s cynical.”

In the presidential year, the Moderate Party will be another vehicle for voters to vote for Democratic incumbent Biden against the Republican presidential candidate, the source said. Former President Donald Trump, 76, filed his third bid for the White House on November 15. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 44, is also reportedly planning to run.

“This is another place where anti-Trump people can vote,” the source said.

New York State Conservative Party chairman Gerard Kassar said Democrats are trying to find ways to “manipulate the ballot” because voters are unhappy with their policies.

“Democrats see the writing on the wall. Republicans and conservatives can now go toe-to-toe with Democrats because they have swung too far to the left. They need to manipulate the voting lines,” Kassar said.

“It’s a play on words. They are trying to use the word “moderates” to pull the Democrats out of the hole. They want to manipulate the voting results because they can’t defend their policies.”

Kassar said Kantor was “absolutely not a moderate”, calling him an old-school liberal, unionist.

The push for a moderate party also discusses attempts to persuade more practical, centrist business leaders who are fed up with polarization to join the party.

For his part, state Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs said no thanks to the creation of a new Moderate Party.

“I’m against. It will actually complicate and confuse the political environment,” Jacobs said. “We are a progressive moderate party.”

Jacobs argued that both New York Governor Cathy Hochul and Adams are down-to-earth, mainstream Democrats or progressive moderates. WFP backed Hochul against Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin in last year’s gubernatorial race and took credit for her harder-than-expected 6-point win.

The WFP is fighting Adams’ agenda and has called on city council candidates seeking its approval to stop funding the police, not accept donations from law enforcement unions, and block charter schools.

Kantor declined to comment when contacted by phone.
