Mother says Oklahoma schoolgirl forced to reveal her bra at school while looking for a vape pen

An Oklahoma woman who says her daughter’s school principal forced a high school student to show her bra during a strip search is suing the school district.

According to a lawsuit filed this month in Oklahoma County, Crystal Trenkamp alleges that on May 10, 2021, her daughter was asked to show her bra in front of another student and staff at Heartland High School. The child, a minor, is identified only by initials.

The lawsuit alleges that Trenkamp’s daughter was suspected of using “nicotine vapes” and was searched in a room with an “open window overlooking” the school’s common areas. According to the lawsuit, Heartland High School Principal Veronica Johnson, a school resource officer and another student were also in the room.

It alleges that Johnson ordered Trenkamp’s daughter to lift her shirt and twirl, and then asked the child about her underwear. The lawsuit says the child was ordered to lift the shirt high enough for Johnson to see her bra.

According to the lawsuit, the vape pen was not found.

Neither Johnson nor Edmond Public Schools’ principal immediately responded to a request for comment on Monday.

Trencamp is suing the county for at least $25,000, alleging that the principal’s actions were outrageous and beyond “the limits of all human decency.”

Trenkamp alleges that the principal and the school district violated her daughter’s Fourth Amendment rights, sexual harassment and assault laws.

The lawsuit also accuses Johnson of violating county policy and state law by citing an Oklahoma law that prohibits strip searches of students. The law states that during an unreasonable search, a student’s clothes may not be removed, “except for outerwear for cold weather.”
