Morgan grand jury indicts Huntsville man for home renovation fraud

January 22. A Morgan County grand jury indicted a Morgan County grand jury on three counts of home renovation fraud and two related counts of forgery. A Huntsville man remains in the Morgan County Jail for more than six months after his arrest.

Decatur police charged Johnny Ray Jordan, 61, with five felony charges after Decatur and Lacey Spring residents said they hired and paid Jordan, who claimed to be a licensed contractor, to do work on their homes. They told the police that he didn’t do the job.

According to Morgan County Jail records, his bail is set at $115,000.

According to an affidavit from Decatur Police Detective Eric Keller, Jordan represented himself as a state-licensed contractor operating under the commercial name of Huntsville Construction and Renovation – J&J Construction. He listed license number 2114716.

“Due to the fact that Jordan does not own the company and does not have a valid contractor license in Alabama, these documents contain fictitious information that was falsely framed using an invalid license number to deceive the resident into believing that Jordan is a certified licensed contractor,” Keller wrote.

One of the allegations, dated Dec. 8, states that Jordan “caused a misrepresentation of a material fact relating to the terms of a contract or agreement that (Jordan) promised to honor that he did not intend or did not know would not be honored.”

District Attorney Scott Anderson said it was important that his office try to stop this type of illegal activity.

“A person’s home is almost always their most valuable asset,” he said last week. “I think it is important for prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to initiate criminal cases and impose appropriate punishment on anyone who poses a threat to these investments.”

A trial date has not been set.

Alabama court records show that since 1994, Jordan has been charged more than 40 times with theft, forgery, or fraud in Morgan, Limestone, Madison, and Cullman counties. , partly because he was on probation for the Limestone County charge.

The story goes on

Jordan filed numerous handwritten motions, including one motion to change the location of the hearing due to high pre-trial publicity and another motion to fire a court-appointed attorney. His lawyer, Dwight Jett Jr., filed a motion on November 22, asking the court to clarify whether he still represents Jordan. The court did not rule on the petition.

In the petition, Jett noted that the district attorney’s office offered a plea deal that would see Jordan sentenced to 15 years with three years in prison, followed by probation “and a substantial amount of damages.” Jett wrote that Jordan rejected the settlement and demanded a jury trial.

Second-degree forgery and reconviction for home renovation fraud are Class C felony offenses punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.
