More than a dozen people were injured in an industrial explosion outside of Cleveland

More than a dozen people were injured, at least one critically, in an explosion at an industrial plant outside of Cleveland on Monday, Cleveland-based NBC affiliate WKYC said.

Late morning explosion at I Schumann & Co. metal alloy manufacturing facility in Oakwood Village southeast of Cleveland was described by an Oakwood fire captain as a “big bang”.

The official said at least one person was taken by helicopter to the hospital. The subsequent fire was brought under control on Monday afternoon, but crews were still working on hotspots, the captain said.

The explosion scattered debris across the street, cratered a building and created a plume of smoke that could be seen for miles, according to a social media video reviewed by NBC News and footage from the scene.

According to an Oakwood fire department spokesman, all employees of the plant have been held accountable. I am Schumann & Co. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
