Missing Constance Martin and her partner arrested as search begins for her child

Constance Maarten, the daughter of an aristocrat, and her partner Mark Gordon are in police custody after being arrested in Brighton.

The Metropolitan Police said an urgent search operation is underway to find their child, who has not received medical attention since being born in early January.

The couple, who were arrested last night in Brighton on suspicion of child neglect, are known to have so far refused to tell police the sex of their child.

Police said they still hope the baby is alive and urged anyone who can look after the baby to come forward.

DSI Lewis Basford of the Metropolitan Police said: “At this time we cannot tell if it is a boy or a girl and we are still waiting for the results of a test of the placenta found in their car on the M61.

“At the moment, we are still in a position where they are detained on suspicion of child neglect and the search for the baby is underway.

“We are looking for an open area, outbuildings where they could put a child while they were in the area before we arrested them.

“There is nothing to say that they were in the trailer, we still think they lived in the open air, and this leads us and the place of detention to search on the street.

“I think we should keep hoping that maybe they let someone else take care of the baby who thinks he is doing something good for the couple, but as we know, as the temperature drops and the longer a child goes without parents, the risks are high.”

Forces said the couple were located by Sussex Police officers at Stanmer Villas, Brighton on Monday evening after a member of the public said he had seen them just before 9:30 p.m.

Marten, 35, and Gordon, 48, have been traveling around the UK by taxi since their car was found on fire on the M61 motorway in Bolton, Greater Manchester on 5 January.

Authorities previously believed the couple slept in a blue tent and evaded police detection by moving around frequently and covering their faces with CCTV images.

The story goes on

The couple traveled from Bolton to Liverpool, then to Harwich in Essex, then to east London and then to Newhaven in Sussex, where they were seen near the ferry port on 8 January.

Miss Martin, from a wealthy aristocratic family, was a promising drama student when she first met Mr Gordon in 2016.

Since then, the couple have led an isolated lifestyle, and in September, when Miss Martin was already pregnant, they began to move around rented apartments.

Gordon served 20 years in a US prison for rape and battery at the age of 14.

It is not known if their baby was full-term or had health problems.

Anyone who can assist in the search for the couple’s child is strongly encouraged to call 999.
