Microsoft says it will give US workers unlimited vacation time

(Bloomberg) — Microsoft said it is changing its vacation policy to give American workers unlimited vacation time, in line with the system already in place at its LinkedIn division.

The changes go into effect on January 16 and only apply to U.S. full-time employees, a company spokesperson said. The company has been thinking about this change for several years to accommodate more flexible working hours.

Such policies, applied at companies such as Netflix Inc. and senior bankers at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., can be challenging when managers set expectations for little or no days off. The spokesperson said that Microsoft had considered the potential downsides of such a system and hoped it could provide workers with enough vacation time.

Unlimited time can also be a boon for employers because the plan requires less work to administer and because laid-off or terminated employees do not need to be compensated for accumulated unused time. In April, Microsoft will make a lump sum payment to workers with accumulated time.
