Michigan parents speak out after saying their daughter almost got hit by a school bus

ADRIAN, MI (WTVG) — Parents will do anything to protect their children, and when their five-year-old daughter was nearly hit by a school bus while trying to get into it, parents Amber and Frank Torres found they couldn’t. Be quiet.

“He made sure the girls who got on the bus had already got on and closed the door. He didn’t look at the door, didn’t pay attention to whether someone else was coming in or not, he just closed the door on her, ”said Frank Torres.

Amber says she contacted Madison School Principal Nick Steinmetz several times but received no response. “And he didn’t call me and he didn’t call me until I contacted the news station and then he decided to call me?”

In an email sent to 13abc, Superintendent Steinmetz said:

“I had the opportunity to speak to Mrs. Torres this afternoon. Mrs. Torres approached the area about her anxiety about getting her daughter off the bus stop in the morning. This morning she came and met with our director of transportation to review the bus recording. From the bus video, it was hard to tell where her anxiety was coming from. However, by taking the time to discuss the developments with Mrs. Torres, we were able to strengthen our practice not only at this bus stop, but at all of our bus stops. The Madison School District is taking great precautions with our transportation department. We get to the point where we don’t even let our students cross the road to get on our buses. All of our bus pickups are always on the side of the bus door.

As Superintendent, I strongly believe that positive relationships/interactions are the best way to resolve any issues/problems that arise. Today was a great example of this. I truly appreciate partnerships with parents like Mrs. Torres.”

“They were more concerned about being perfect in this situation than they were about the safety of the children they were supposed to be protecting, and that’s terrible,” Amber said.

Now she’s happy to talk to Steinmetz about it, but the footage is about her. 13abc requested it from Steinmetz but received no response.

“You couldn’t see the doors, you can’t see the doors in this and if you could see you would see it and it’s so unsettling because the only thing you can see in this video is that it doesn’t He didn’t look at the doors when he closed them, and he didn’t look at the doors when he started moving,” Amber said.

Amber hopes to encourage others to speak up for their children. “My child is my life, don’t give up on your children.” She also says that she holds the superintendent responsible for his answer.
