Miami Beach restricts alcohol sales, but lifts curfew due to spring break violence

Miami Beach, Florida officials have rejected a proposal to impose a curfew next weekend in favor of restrictions on the sale of alcohol in a “best-than-nothing” attempt to curb spring break chaos after two shooting deaths in recent days.

The city commission held a heated debate on Monday about how to spend the last weekend of the month, with some arguing that the curfew was an important measure to prevent street violence while others said it would punish businesses.

A midnight curfew this coming weekend is likely to affect the Ultra Music Festival, an electronic dance music event that draws thousands to the area. The last sets start at 23:00 every night of the three-day event.
