Memphis police officer Jeffrey Redd died two weeks after he was shot dead in a library, according to MPD.

A Memphis police officer who was shot and killed in a branch of the Memphis Public Library in early February died Saturday, the Memphis Police Department said in a statement.

Officer Jeffrey Redd, 49, who has been with the department for 15 years, responded to a “suspected trespasser” on Feb. 2 at a business in the 5100 block of Poplar, according to Kelly McAlister, a Tennessee public relations officer. Bureau of Investigation.

About 30 minutes later, the same man, later identified as Thorens Jackson Jr., “allegedly got into a confrontation with a citizen” in the Poplar White station library.

“According to initial reports, since two [officers] tried to talk to [Jackson], [Jackson] pulled out a gun and fired at one of the officers,” Macalister said. — The second officer returned fire, striking [Jackson].”

Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Redd was taken to One Regional Hospital in “extremely critical condition,” the MPD said at the time.

“Despite the best efforts of Regional One staff, Officer Redd succumbed to his injuries,” the MPD said Saturday.

The second officer who shot Jackson was not identified, but Redd was identified by Bishop Brandon Porter of COGIC. Redd was a member and chief of security for Porter’s church.

A few years ago, Redd was on duty when he was hit by a car. Once he recovered, he returned to the police department to “protect and serve,” Porter said. “We have to stand up with our policemen. We can have lousy apples and we have to deal with it, but don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.”

Porter was among local pastors who delivered words of comfort at Tyre Nichols’ funeral the day before the library shooting.

In a statement, MPD said Redd worked at Old Allen, Union, Raines, Mt Moriah, Ridgeway and Appling Farms stations. Prior to joining the department, he served in the United States Marine Corps.
