McCarthy says he will meet Biden again on US debt ceiling

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Thursday that he and President Joe Biden had agreed to meet again to talk about raising the US government’s borrowing limit.

Biden and McCarthy held their first talks on Wednesday to see how they could work together. The couple spoke again Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast, where they sat together.

“He’ll call me in a couple of days to set up another meeting,” the California Republican told reporters. “We are going to meet again to discuss the debt ceiling and ways we can find ways to save money and get on the path to balance.”

Earlier this month, the US government approached a $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, prompting the Treasury to warn that it may not be able to prevent a default in early June.

Biden and the White House have refused to negotiate with Republicans over debt spending, saying the issue lies with Congress.

But after Wednesday’s meeting, McCarthy said he thought they could find common ground, and the White House said Biden had told McCarthy he was willing to work with the Republicans “in good faith.”

On Thursday, McCarthy stressed that the debt ceiling decision must include spending reforms. “In the end, we will reform spending,” McCarthy said. “You won’t raise your debt ceiling without changing your behavior.”
