Mass shooting in hometown devastates actor Sherry Cole

PARK CITY, UT (AP) — For actress Sherry Cola, a mass shooting in her hometown of Monterey Park, Calif., left her devastated ahead of the premiere of her new movie, Flaws, at the Sundance Film Festival.

“To be honest, I definitely cried in my sleep because this is Monterey Park, California, where I grew up, 626 San Gabriel Valley,” Cola said. “Do you know where my Buddhist temple is located? Like all my friends I grew up with, they were born in Monterey Park. It’s my hometown, which I’m so proud to call my hometown.”

Flaws is the story of three Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) friends who live in the Bay Area and find themselves. The Saturday night shoot left the cast, including Cola, Randall Park, Justin H. Ming and Ally Mackie, with the daunting task of mourning the victims as they spoke about the film ahead of its Sunday premiere in Park City, Utah.

Saturday night in Monterey Park, a city of about 60,000 on the eastern edge of Los Angeles, a gunman killed 10 people, mostly Chinese Asian immigrants or first-generation Asian Americans. The massacre disrupted Lunar New Year celebrations and sparked fear in Monterey Park and other nearby communities with large Asian American populations.

On Sunday morning, Cola was still mulling over her emotions, there was little information available, and the search for the perpetrator was still ongoing.

“This is just a reminder as we premiere this movie today, celebrating the unapologetic, authentic voices of AAPI in a different way, it’s just a reminder that we still need to rebuild our reputation as people in this country and in this industry,” he said. Cola. .

“Today we have this beautiful film that we still want to talk about,” Cola added. “And I think by talking about it, we are moving the culture and the community forward. I think just showing each other grace and covering for each other is all we can do, you know?

Park, who directed the film, added, “No matter what information comes out, it’s so, so infuriating.”

A moment of silence was observed for the victims at the nearby Sundance Lounge.
