A Pennsylvania candy factory fined more than $14,500 for a 2022 incident in which two workers fell into a vat of chocolate.
Two contractors at the M&M/Mars plant in Elizabethtown were neither authorized nor trained to work in tanks, according to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. According to the Associated Press, OSHA holds Mars Wrigley responsible for the incident.
The pair were reportedly hired by an outside contractor and fell into a chocolate tank in June while doing repairs.
They had to be rescued by rescuers, who cut a hole in the bottom of the partially filled tank to free them, AP said. Both were taken to the hospital.
A Mars Wrigley spokesman told the reporter that employee safety “is a top priority for our business.”
“As always, we appreciate OSHA’s collaborative approach in working with us to conduct a post-action review.”
