February 5 (UPI) — A couple have been sentenced to 10 years in prison for attempting to travel to the Middle East to fight for ISIS.

James Bradley, 21, and Arwa Muthana, 30, were also sentenced to 11 years on parole after serving their prison sentences by Judge Paul Engelmeier of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York on Friday. branch announced.

The Justice Department said Bradley, also known as Abdullah, is from New York’s Bronx neighborhood and began expressing “violent extremist views” at least in 2019, including in correspondence with an undercover agent starting in 2020.

During one conversation with an agent, Bradley said he wanted to attack a US military base.

The couple, who married in 2021, continued to discuss plans to join and help ISIS, federal prosecutors said.

They contacted the undercover agent several times to coordinate transportation to the Middle East by freighter.

Muthana, from Hoover, Alabama, traveled with Bradley to New York a few days after the wedding, with the intention of boarding a ship. They were arrested on their way to the ship.

“After Muthana was arrested, she renounced her Miranda rights and stated during an interview that she was ready to fight and kill Americans if it was in the name of Allah,” the Justice Department said in a statement.

Bradley and Muthana both pleaded guilty for attempting to provide material support to ISIS in September. The maximum penalty for this crime is 20 years in prison.

Before and during their marriage, Bradley regularly shared “extremist content” and views online, including videos of a New York police officer being stabbed and ISIS militants shooting at a soldier.
