Man shot to death in Times Square over drug-related shooting: sources

Police and sources said a man was killed in Times Square Thursday in a shooting believed to have been carried out by suspected drug dealers.

Two men ran out of a deli on the corner of West 44th Street and Eighth Avenue around 5:15 p.m. and started shooting, hitting the 22-year-old man in the chest, police and sources said.

The victim was taken to the nearest hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It is unclear if he was the target of the attack.

According to law enforcement sources, the two suspects are believed to be drug dealers.

A shooting in a busy tourist and suburban area shocked passers-by.

One strapper told The Post he was leaving the subway when he heard the gunshot.

“When you were leaving, there were two uniformed police officers standing in front of the turnstiles, and I yelled at them to get out,” said the man, who identified himself as John Smith, adding that he was “frightened” when he went outside.

Another New Yorker said he was “shocked” by the shooting in a busy tourist area.

The man was fatally shot at 44th Street and 8th Avenue. Robert Mecha.

“I could be the one. This is my thought. It could have been me,” Steve, who chose not to give his last name, told The Post, noting that he works in Times Square.

“My daughter is at home, my wife is at home. As if I could be the one. So I’m happy that I’m not the one; I’m here and it’s scary.”

The NYPD closed off the entire intersection as dozens of officers investigated the shooting.

The militants are still on the run, according to police.
