Man shot dead by Shreveport police in response to domestic riots

Authorities said a black man was shot and killed by a Shreveport, Louisiana police officer on Friday as he answered a domestic disturbance call.

Alonzo Bagley, 43, died in a hospital after Shreveport officer Alexander Tyler shot him in the chest, the Louisiana State Police Investigation Agency said.

Tyler and another unnamed Shreveport officer were called to Villa Norte just before 11:00 pm Friday to investigate an incident involving Bagley. After contacting the complainant, Bagley allegedly jumped off a rear balcony and fled on foot, Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Lamar Davis told a press conference.

After a short foot chase, Officer Tyler saw Bagley around the corner of the building. Davis said that Tyler fired once, hitting Bagley in the chest.

Tyler and the second officer performed CPR, and Bagley was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The incident was captured on police body camera video, which will be made public “as soon as we can release it,” Davis said.

The shooting follows the January 10 death of Tyre Nichols, a black man who was severely beaten by Memphis police officers. The death of Nichols, as well as the death of other blacks, including George Floyd, sparked a public outcry against the use of force by the police.

Davis asked the people of Shreveport to “remain patient as we continue to conduct a very thorough investigation” of the shooting.

The Shreveport Police Department said Tyler, 23, was placed on administrative leave. He was hired by the department in May 2021.
