Man charged with strangulation, lawyer claims to maintain his innocence

28th of February. A Gainesville man was charged with murder by a Hall County grand jury for strangling a woman and repeatedly hitting her in the head, according to court documents.

Diandra Andreus Dryden, 23, was charged February 15 with malicious intent, aggravated murder and aggravated assault in connection with the January 22 death of 34-year-old Latasha Smith of Buford.

Smith was found on January 23 in the grass near the Pointe Lanier apartments on Spring Road.

Gainesville police said Dryden and Smith knew each other but did not reveal the exact nature of their relationship.

Defense attorney Chris van Rossem said Dryden claimed he was not involved in Smith’s death. The lawyer said he was hoping for a hearing for probable cause, but the charge was filed before that opportunity.

“I think the most important thing in moving forward … is to figure out who was where and when,” van Rossem said.

Van Rossem did not go into details of the theory of the defense in this case.

“We are still in the early stages of our investigation,” he said.
