Man accused of shooting and killing Butler County native testifies

The Nashville murder trial of two men charged with the murder of a Butler County native will soon be handed over to a jury. On Saturday, one of the men testified in his defense.

Devonte Hill and James Cowan are accused of killing Caitlin Kaufman on her way to work. Both were given the opportunity to testify on Saturday. Cowan waived his right to state his position before Hill answered questions. One of Hill’s first words was that he and Cowan were cousins ​​and that Cowan had nothing to do with the murder.

Kaufman was driving on Interstate 440 in December 2020. The witness testified that Hill told him that he became angry after being cut off, which angered him to the point that he fired six shots at Kaufman’s car.

Hill said he was the one who fired the shots that killed Kaufman. He said he “didn’t think” at the time. He also said he was using cocaine and taking Xanax before the shooting took place. He said that Cowan and he also smoked marijuana.

Closing arguments will begin on Monday.
