Making the Rounds: Another Domed Home Arrives in Miami, Finds a Buyer

It was supposed to be the future of Florida construction. Instead, a geodesic dome home is a rarity in Miami.

A plethora of offers came in even before the 6,045-square-foot home officially went on the market in early February, priced at $1,850,000. According to Realtor.com®, it is currently awaiting sale.

The curved structure on the half-acre lot is a marvel of design.

“His footprint is very minimal from an outside perspective. When you walk up to the house, you are obviously intrigued by the dome and the shape of the house, but you don’t really get a sense of its scale until you step inside,” the listing agent says. Avi Verdewith compass.

Inside, he continues, “you’re blown away by the volume and height you get.”

Futuristic design

The seller is the original owner of the house, which was built in 1985. Verde says the inspiration comes from the U.S. pavilion at World’s Fair Expo 67, now known as the Montreal Biosphere, designed by the dome designer. Buckminster Fuller.

“The geodetic shape was envisioned as the future because it was supposed to be able to withstand the elements much better than the traditional houses that were in South Florida at the time,” Verde explains. “It was supposed to be an engineering marvel that would perform well in extreme weather conditions, but that didn’t happen.”

The five-bedroom, 3.5-bath home retains original 1980s features, including colorful carpets, a retro bathroom, and a red and white kitchen.

“You have to imagine the futuristic design that came along with the 80s,” Verde says. “Everything works, and you can live as you are.”

The house has three levels, the entrance is located on the ground floor.

“When you enter, the spherical shape of the dome just amazes you. It’s incredible,” Verde says. “There are several hexagonal skylights throughout the dome. Wherever you go, you get amazing natural light coming from everywhere.”

The living area and master bedroom are on this floor.

“Everything kind of circulates around, so when you enter, you go into the lobby, which welcomes you, and then into the formal living room,” he explains. “Everything inside has a modular form. The kitchen is in the middle and accessible from everywhere.”

The third level is a loft that extends beyond the spiral staircase in the master bedroom and is not included in the official area of the house.

“It could be an extra lounge space, an art space, a library space, etc. What this space can be used for is really limitless,” Verde says. “When you are there, you feel like you are in a treehouse. You’re so tall and there are skylights above you.”
