Long Islander seriously burned after boat explosion in canal
A Long Island man suffered serious burns and injuries when the boat he was riding exploded in a canal on Thursday, local officials said.
The dramatic scene was filmed at the Orovok Creek Canal in Islip shortly after 10:15 pm on Sunday evening. This was reported by the Islip fire department..
Officials determined that a propane explosion had occurred on board the sailboat, severely damaging the ship and trapping a passenger inside the cabin under the wreckage. By the time firefighters arrived, firefighters had already extinguished the fire.
Dramatic videos of the explosion, received by CBS Newsshows that the boat caught fire while standing in the water, scattering debris in all directions.
“I heard a loud bang, like a bomb going off,” eyewitness Gus, whose yacht was moored nearby, told the news agency. Gus said he called 911 after hearing the victim’s cries for help.

Firefighters and representatives from the Suffolk County Police Department boarded the boat and began removing debris from the body of the man, who was identified as Scott Murray, 44, according to fire officials.
At the same time, other rescuers made a hole in the port side of the boat so that a rescue basket could get on board to load the patient.
Rescuers freed Murray from the boat and carried him on a life basket to an ambulance, where he was immediately treated for serious burns and other injuries, officials said. He was then flown to Islip High School where he was picked up by a Suffolk Police Helicopter and flown to Stony Brook University Hospital.
