Long Island mother allegedly hit teen twice to avenge her bullied son

A Long Island mother allegedly hit a 15-year-old boy twice with her car to avenge her bullied son.

Jennifer Nelson, 35, of Shirley, Suffolk, is now charged with attempted murder for allegedly crashing her car into a teenager in the parking lot of a Manhattan bagel shop in October and then running over him twice because she believed he was previously bullied and robbed her son.

Nelson then tried to trade her rented 2020 Honda Passport for another model to confuse cops, prosecutors say.

“This defendant – an adult – allegedly thought he could take the law into his own hands to kill a 15-year-old in the process,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a statement Monday when Nelson was charged with the crime. .

“This defendant’s incredibly misguided attempt to avenge the alleged victimization of her own child cannot be justified,” he said. “Citizens cannot take the law into their own hands and instead must work with law enforcement and my office to get justice in every case.”

Authorities said the two teenagers were later arrested on suspicion of robbing Nelson’s son, but the hit-and-run victim was not one of them.

On October 7, an enraged Nelson drove her car into a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot across the street from William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach and confronted a group of teenagers armed with a knife and a small bat, according to prosecutors.

The 15-year-old boy left and ended up in the parking lot outside the bagel store, prosecutors said, while Nelson got back behind the wheel and followed the teen.

She crashed into him and knocked him to the ground, then “ran over the victim, drove into the curb, turned around, ran over the victim again,” authorities said.

The boy has multiple pelvic fractures, six rib fractures, a punctured lung and “numerous bruises and abrasions,” prosecutors said in a statement.

In an email to The Post on Monday, Nelson’s attorney Paul D’Emilia called the DA’s version of the incident “unfortunate and misleading” and said the prosecutor’s report “attempted to combine two separate events on that day as one continuous occurrence.”

“RS. Nelson received a desperate phone call from her son, who was being bullied and physically abused again in the parking lot of William Floyd High School,” D’Emilia said. “She found him barefoot and surrounded by tormentors when she drove up a few minutes later .

“After she repelled the attack on her son, she traveled to both middle school and high school to report the incident and also try to get her son’s sneakers back.”

D’Emilia said Nelson hit the teen nearly two hours later as she was driving her son home.

“A group of men were running through the streets and one of the young men was injured after colliding with Ms. Nelson’s car,” he said. “RS. Nelson did not see or recognize the wounded young man.”

He said his client was “completely taken by surprise” and did not see the teen run to his car and the victim “ran away after the incident.”

However, Nelson was arraigned Monday on charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in serious bodily injury.

The Suffolk County Attorney’s Office requested that she be held on $250,000 cash bail or $1 million bail, but Superior Court Judge Timothy Mazzei released her without bail.

Nelson is due back in court on March 21.
