Lexington man accused of repeatedly kicking pregnant woman resulting in fetal death

A Lexington man charged with fetal homicide allegedly kicked a pregnant woman three times in the stomach during a physical altercation, according to court documents.

Rigoberto Vazquez-Barradas, 24, is charged with first-degree fetal homicide, first-degree strangulation and second-degree assault – domestic violence, Lexington police previously said in a press release. Police said they were called Friday morning to a local hospital where a victim of domestic violence was being treated.

Court documents say Vazquez-Barradas and the woman, who was 18 weeks pregnant, got into an argument that escalated into a fight on Thursday. Vazquez-Barradas pushed the woman to the ground four times and kicked her three times in the stomach, court documents say.

Vazquez-Barradas also strangled a woman on the ground, according to court documents.

According to court documents, while talking to investigators, Vazquez-Barradas admitted to pushing the woman, but denied kicking her in the stomach.

Medical staff told investigators that a fight between Vázquez-Barradas and the woman caused the fetus’s placenta to separate from the woman’s abdominal wall. According to court documents, this resulted in the death of the fetus. The woman also received serious bodily injuries.

Vazquez-Barradas was held at the Fayette County Detention Center on $300,000 bail, according to prison records. According to court records, his next court appearance is scheduled for Friday morning.
