Lawmakers beat lobbyists in annual charity hockey game

After the House of Representatives handed out the week’s vote on Wednesday, House Majority Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota) traded ballot papers for an ice sheet and laced up for Congressional bandy.

Emmer and the rest of the lawmakers’ team beat the lobbying team 8-3 after taking the lead, marking the lawmakers’ fifth straight victory in the 13th annual charity game.

“When you’re on the bench, it doesn’t matter who you are… It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican. Politics doesn’t matter. You just show up, play, and it’s good,” Emmer, a well-known congressional hockey fan who played for the University of Alaska Fairbanks, said on the ice after the game. He was smiling all over as he held the tournament trophy.

“Let’s face it, ice only exists in one place, in heaven.” Emmer said.

Formally, a GOP representative was the only legislator who participated in Wednesday’s game at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va., while the rest of the team consisted of congressional staff, including Rob Wagener from the office of Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wisconsin) . and Amber Moore of Dick Durbin’s Senate Majority Office, Illinois.

“More deserving members of Congress would have played if it wasn’t for an evening of outings,” said Emmer, who has been at the event since joining Congress in 2015. House Democrats were also not in town for their annual retreat retreat in Baltimore, Maryland.

Three hockey Olympians helped the Washington Insiders on the ice: 2018 gold medalist Hayley Skarupa played for the lawmakers team, and 2018 gold medalist and 2022 silver medalist Megan Keller and 2022 silver medalist Hayley Scamurra played for the lobbying team.

The Team Lobbyists included Trevor Hanger of Forbes Tate, who did headlines a few years ago as a backup goaltender for the Washington Capitals.

The bandy convention has raised over $1 million for charities since 2009, with organizers saying nearly $150,000 was raised this year. The beneficiaries are the Fort Dupont Hockey Club in Washington, D.C., the Capital Beltway Warriors hockey program, USA Warriors Hockey, and the annual 22 Hours of Hockey event hosted by the Tampa Warriors.

Emmer teased that he would use his skills as a hockey player in the new GOP House majority as Whip.

“They haven’t seen anything yet,” he said. “We play a little differently. We love conflict. We like to mix things up a bit. People tend to – let’s say they have some juices, they tend to tell you what they really think, and then you can figure out what the problem is and solve it.

“I can’t wait for next year. I think I should play well in my 70s,” said 61-year-old Emmer.
