ISP: Gunman shot dead by Jeffersonville police at apartment complex

March 10 – JEFFERSONVILLE. Indiana State Police detectives are investigating after a gunman was shot and killed by Jeffersonville police on Thursday night.

Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Cary Hulse told the News and Tribune on Friday morning that the man shot dead by police was still in critical condition at the University of Louisville Hospital as of 9:30 am.

JPD employees arrived at the Eighth Street apartment complex around 7:00 p.m. after someone called 911 and reported that “a person with a suspected mental disorder was walking around the parking lot with a gun,” the ISP said.

Shortly after the JPD contacted the man, he allegedly fired his pistol into the air and pointed it at the police.

“As a result, at least one officer fired his unit’s weapon, hitting the target,” the ISP said in a statement.

No employees were hurt, and no one in the residential complex was hurt.

The ISP is investigating at the request of Jeffersonville Police Chief Kenny Cavanaugh.
