Innocent dad visiting Marist student for Family Weekend is shot dead at NY hotel

A dad visiting his kid during Family Weekend at upstate Marist College was fatally shot when bullets flew in the lobby of the local Courtyard Marriott where the innocent man was staying, authorities said Monday.

Two men with gang ties were nabbed in the shooting, and cops said they later found bomb-making materials and a “ghost gun” rifle in the suspects’ room at the Poughkeepsie hotel, according to the local NBC-TV affiliate.

The deadly violence erupted after one of the suspects got into an argument with hotel workers and others when he went down to the lobby to get coffee around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, a senior law enforcement official told the outlet.

The shooter had a 30-round, high-capacity magazine on him at the time, the source said.

The father of a Marist student was shot dead in the mayhem, the source said. He was not immediately identified.

“Yesterday morning, authorities made us aware of the tragic, fatal shooting of a parent of a Marist student at a local hotel several miles from campus,” a Marist spokesman said in a statement obtained by The Post.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, and we are offering the full support of the Marist community. We remain in contact with local authorities and will keep our community informed with any updates.”

The shooting came as the school celebrated Family Weekend, in which students are encouraged to invite their families for sports, entertainment and other activities.

During a search of the hotel after the shooting, investigators found materials that could be used as explosives, as well as manuals on the making of bombs, in the suspects’ room, police said. It’s unclear what the men might have been planning to do with the materials, authorities said.

The suspects had been smoking a PCP-like substance in their room before the shooting, the senior official told NBC.

Devin Taylor is suspected in a previous murder case tied to a robbery, although no further details were immediately available, the outlet said. The other suspect in Sunday’s case was identified as Roy Johnson Jr., NBC said.

Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro told WCBS, “Two individuals that are in custody are known to law enforcement, having no association with the parent of student that we are aware of, and we do not believe that it is affiliated or associated with activities at Marist.’’
