In Illinois, a pregnant woman was hit by a car while trying to save her baby from car thieves.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a pregnant Illinois woman was beaten, stole a car and ran over in the driveway when her car was stolen – with her 2-year-old son in the back seat.

The incident occurred around 3:35 p.m. Thursday, when deputies reached out to an apartment building on the 16000 block of Highway 137 in unincorporated Libertyville, about 40 minutes north of Chicago, about a carjacking with a two-year-old child in the car.

According to a preliminary investigation, the 34-year-old victim had just returned home and pulled into the driveway, authorities said. She brought one of her kids inside and was back to pick up her son when a white 2000s BMW with a black bumper and loud exhaust pulled into her driveway behind her 2021 Volkswagen Atlas.

The man got off the passenger side of the BMW and struggled to get into the woman’s Volkswagen, who was trying to keep her son safe. The man knocked the woman to the ground and stole her car with her son inside. The man and the driver of the BMW fled the scene.

One of them ran her over as they were fleeing, causing serious injuries to her limbs, authorities said. The victim was still able to call 911, and the deputies immediately responded.

Shortly thereafter, someone working in a business on Lakeside Drive in Waukegan called 911 to stay, they just saw two cars pull into the parking lot and that the driver of one of the cars had abandoned a small child, police said. The drivers of both cars fled again.

The 911 caller rescued the child before he entered a busy roadway. Waukegan authorities responded to the scene and sheriff’s officers confirmed that the child found was a kidnapped child.

The boy is safe and recovering at home, while his mother, who is six months pregnant, is being treated for a broken pelvis and elbow at a local hospital, CBS Chicago reports.

Authorities found the stolen Volkswagen in a parking lot near Kasmir Pulaski and Highway 43.

Authorities are still looking for a BMW that was stolen last week from a car dealership in Waukegan. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lake County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Department at 847-377-4000 or contact the Lake County Crime Squad at: www.lakecountycrimestoppers.org.
