I got fired from Amazon. The lack of transparency as to why certain people were fired made the whole process extremely robotic.

  • Amazon has laid off a total of 18,000 employees over the past couple of months, more than expected based on reports.
  • The last round of layoffs took place on 18 January. An insider spoke to a recruiter who was involved in these layoffs.
  • She said the process felt “extremely robotic” and would like the company to be more transparent about its plans.

This “As Said” essay is based on a conversation with a former Amazon employee who was fired on January 18 due to the company’s 18,000 staff cuts. She spoke on condition of anonymity to protect her career, but Insider confirmed her identity and previous employment. The conversation has been edited for greater length and clarity.

It was embarrassing to find out that I was fired by email. I know it was probably time to send everyone at the same time, but it was a very generic email that didn’t go over well.

The first email came early on the morning of January 18th saying something along the lines of “Layoffs are coming, we’re here to support you” and then an hour later I got an email confirming that they had terminated my position.

I worked as a technical recruiter for Amazon Web Services last year and really enjoyed it. It’s just awful that you got fired. When you find a team that is so supportive, it’s very hard not to take it personally when things like this happen. I thought I was doing well and I had pretty high rates of what I was doing.

After receiving the initial email informing me that I had been fired, I heard from the management of my organization and later from Human Resources. It was very robotic.

This whole process was extremely frustrating due to the lack of transparency that we were provided with. I know that Amazon is a giant company, and I know that the logistics of a more personalized approach would be a nightmare, but on the other hand, we are human. This is our income.

I have been expecting more job cuts since our CEO Andrew Jassi released a statement 2 weeks ago that more layoffs are coming on the 18th.

It was terrible. We were all on edge for 2 weeks, but I was in denial. I thought I was safe.

Even though I worked in recruiting and Amazon had suspended recruiting since November, we had projects we were working on and we were busy.

Most of the time I worked at Amazon, it didn’t feel like a giant corporation. I’m sure everyone says they were on the best team, but I truly believe I was on one of the healthiest teams I’ve ever seen.

I was just guessing, but I’m wondering if the bosses would have told us that layoffs were coming if it hadn’t been leaked. It felt like they weren’t going to tell us until yesterday.

In those 2 weeks after the story of additional layoffs was leaked, there was no clarity from management. I didn’t know if it would be random, performance based, or tenure based. The lack of transparency made me feel like I was just a position and not a person.
