Traffic on Interstate 24 near Murfreesboro was stopped for miles on Friday after a man shot himself in the face and ran down the Interstate armed with a handgun.

The man was treated by paramedics and was eventually rushed to St. Thomas Ascension Hospital in Murfreesboro and then taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting came after the man’s girlfriend was driving down I-24 around 5:30 p.m. and the two were arguing, according to police.

After the shooting, the girl stopped and called 911.

When police and rescuers arrived, the man ran down the Interstate highway with a gun in his hand and refused the command to drop the weapon, police said.

According to Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh, charges could be brought.

The Interstate was closed near mile marker 74 and I-840 and is now open again.
