HUD Launches New Website, Resources for Victims of Domestic Violence

Feb. 1 (UPI) — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Wednesday new resources to help survivors of domestic violence.

Those resources include up to US$5 million in funding training and technical assistance under the Violence Against Women Act. Funding will be provided to “HUD grantees and other interested parties.”

The department is also launching new WAVA website in an attempt to protect and help victims of domestic violence, including dating violence, sexual assault and stalking, all of which are covered by the law.

VAWA provides that certain HUD tenants and tenant applicants cannot be evicted or removed from the housing assistance program after they have experienced any of the above types of domestic violence. The department also confirmed that survivors are entitled to access things like emergency transfers for security reasons due to the threat of violence.

Officials also issued a notice defining the department’s legal authority to enforce VAWA parameters.

“The new website, enforcement notice and technical assistance funding are important first steps in helping survivors understand their VAWA rights and housing providers understand their VAWA obligations,” HUD Director of Gender Violence Prevention and Justice Carlo said in a statement. Ng.

“All of these components are vital to ensuring that survivors can find and live in safe, stable and affordable housing.”

Last March, President Joe Biden reauthorized VAWA, ensuring it remains in place until at least 2027, and reaffirmed his statues.

“No one should have to choose between staying home and being safe. The Violence Against Women Act makes it clear that victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking cannot be denied housing and are entitled to an emergency transfer if needed. ” HUD secretary Marcia Fudge said.

“We are explaining these protections on the HUD website so that landlords are aware of our requirements and survivors are aware of their rights.”
