HUD Gives $315 Million to Cities to Address Homelessness

Feb. 2 (UPI) — The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced $315 million in grants to help cities across the country tackle homelessness.

Funds will help 46 cities and towns expand housing options, expand medical services and provide short and long term rental assistance. HUD aims to reduce the number of homeless people by 25% over the next three years.

“Homelessness is a crisis and it can be solved. Supported housing solves the problem of homelessness. This is why, for the first time, the federal government is dedicating dedicated resources to meet the needs of people experiencing homelessness in insecure or rural settings. HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “With these grants and vouchers, HUD is filling this gap and providing communities with the resources and tools to improve the lives and health of people on the streets, in camps, under bridges and in the countryside.”

Chicago will receive a $60 million grant to help improve homelessness and provide access to permanent housing. Dallas plans to use its $22.8 million grant to invest in expanding outreach to homeless streets, permanent housing options, support services, and general system improvements.

Los Angeles and Miami will receive grant money to help people move into temporary and permanent housing, and money will be provided to the State of North Carolina to address rural homelessness in seven counties.

HUD also announced that the 105 municipalities, states and tribes that have joined the House America initiative have collectively provided housing for more than 100,000 homeless families and added more than 40,000 affordable housing units to developments.
