How to Become a Successful Recycler

Many of us know how to recycle, but do we know how to be successful recyclers? There are five key points to keep in mind before putting items in the recycling bin.

Find out what your local recycling program can accept. Corpus Christi accepts paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, jugs and containers, aluminum and steel cans.

Do not trust the pursuing arrows (symbol of recycling). The symbol represents the type of plastic resin used to make the item. This does not mean that it can be processed locally. If you look at the symbol as a guide, the Corpus Christi recycling program can accept numbers 1, 2, and 5. These numbers are commonly found on bottles, jugs, and various containers.

Always store recyclable material in a recycling trolley. Plastic bags and shrink wrap of any kind are not accepted by the Corpus Christi recycling program.

Remember to empty and straighten the cardboard boxes. This saves space, reduces the chance of it getting stuck in the recycling cart, and ensures successful recycling. Please remove all peanut packaging, styrofoam, bubble wrap and plastic packaging and throw them in the trash.

If in doubt, throw it away. If it’s not what your local program accepts, it’s best to throw it in the trash.
