House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green “reminds me of my high school friends.”

  • Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green became political allies.
  • McCarthy said in an interview that Green “reminds me of my high school friends”.
  • Green was once a critic of McCarthy, saying he “doesn’t have the support he needs” in the Republican House of Representatives.

These days, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy has nothing but positive things to say about far-right Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, who was once a thorn in his side and a source of frequent headaches for the House Republican leader.

“If you’re going to fight, you want Marjorie in your trench,” McCarthy said in an interview with the New York Times published on Monday. “When she starts a fight, she will fight until the fight is over. She reminds me of my high school friends that we will stick together until the end.”

Green, for her part, is also clearly in love with McCarthy.

Ahead of a 15-vote streak for Speaker of the House that dragged on for four days, she remained fiercely loyal to the Republican leader and frequently criticized colleagues, many of whom were members of the House Freedom Caucus, who opposed McCarthy’s proposal.

Most recently, last week, she publicly chided fellow Republican Matt Goetz of Florida, who was in the midst of praising Green, for being “weeks behind” the Republicans in the House of Representatives in getting on with his agenda, helping to lead charge against McCarthy.

Early in the previous Congress, committee appointments from the Georgia congressman were withdrawn in a bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives after a history of violent rhetoric became known. According to the Times, she once thought McCarthy played a part in making it happen.

But now, with the Republicans in a slim majority, McCarthy has made good on his promise to give Greene even better committee jobs than she ever had: She got a seat on both the Oversight and Accountability Committee and the Homeland Security Committee.

And Green, a former activist who has promoted unproven or debunked narratives about the pandemic and vaccines in the past, is also reportedly up for a seat on the oversight subcommittee investigating the origins of COVID-19.

But that wasn’t always the case for McCarthy and Green.

McCarthy was once forced to denounce the far-right congresswoman’s rhetoric, including after she attended a white nationalist event in February 2022.

And Green used to be a critic of McCarthy, telling Insider in November 2021 that he “definitely doesn’t have the support he needs right now in the conference” after he refused to punish a group of Republicans in the House of Representatives who helped the Democrats get past the bipartisan infrastructure. . bill.
