HCJ employee accused of beating after meeting with prisoner

January 21. The former Howard County Correctional Officer now faces battery charges following an alleged encounter with a female inmate earlier this month.

Colin M. Byrd, 22, has been called on a Level 6 felony charge of moderate bodily harm for his alleged involvement in an incident that reportedly resulted in an inmate at the Howard County Jail facial trauma, according to online forensic records.

Byrd has also faced disciplinary action in the past for a similar violent incident, department officials said.

His recent charge stems from a complaint received by the Howard County Sheriff’s Department from an inmate on Jan. 3 alleging she was beaten by a corrections officer, according to a department press release.

The complaint was then forwarded to the department’s Criminal Investigation Unit for review.

Further investigation revealed that prior to the alleged incident, the woman needed to be taken out of her cell and placed in restrictive measures due to previous issues, the report said.

So, the investigators said in a press release, the woman was handcuffed, and Byrd escorted her to another cell along the corridor.

Once outside this cell, Byrd allegedly kicked the woman in the leg and knocked her to the floor, leaving her with a laceration over her right eye that required medical attention in the emergency room, according to the report.

Investigators later interviewed Byrd, who said the woman pushed him while they were standing at the camera, according to a media report.

Byrd added that he thought he would lose positioning control, so he placed his foot in front of the woman and placed her face down on the floor, according to his interview with police.

In the same interview, Byrd reportedly told investigators that he “probably could have handled the situation a little differently and that he didn’t want to bring her to the ground so hard”, although he did state that he felt he had handled it. yourself “properly”.

The story goes on

Ultimately, investigators concluded that the female inmate had been handcuffed behind her back and escorted into a secure facility had no chance of escaping, the press release notes, and the risk to Byrd’s safety was minimal.

Byrd, who was placed on administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation, has since been fired from his position with the UCJ.

A date for his upcoming pre-trial conference has yet to be determined.
