Grammy Awards 2023: How to watch and what to expect from the biggest music night of the year

The 65th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on Sunday, February 5th, honoring the finest in the music industry, with comedian Trevor Noah returning as host. The show promises a full cast of contemporary stars, iconic veterans and up-and-coming newcomers, and will include special performances from big names to celebrate hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.

The Grammys will air live from Los Angeles starting at 8:00 pm ET Sunday on CBS, as well as live and on-demand on Paramount+.

Beyoncé tops this year’s list of nominees with nine nominations from the Recording Academy. Kendrick Lamar follows him with eight.

All eyes will be on a handful of races for the top Grammy awards, and the results may be less predictable than usual for several reasons.

Responding to public calls for inclusion, both behind the scenes and behind the scenes, the Recording Academy has undergone significant changes in recent years. The academy’s voter base, previously accused of racial and gender bias, changed dramatically last fall when it welcomed new membership class “Composed of nearly 2,000 diverse music creators and professionals,” the organization said in a statement, noting that the move was part of a conscious and ongoing effort to continue “developing a community that embodies ethnic groups, genres, and crafts.” that fuel the music industry.”

Sunday’s Grammy Awards will be the second to feature 10 more nominees in each of the Big Four categories: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. The Recording Academy has announced plans to increase the number of slots from eight to 10 nominees in these categories at the end of 2021.

The competition this year is especially fierce. Here are the records, albums and artists to watch in the Big Four Grammy categories.

Record of the year

The Recording of the Year Grammy honors the artist for a single track and the producers, sound engineers, mixers and mastering engineers who helped bring it to life. Among this year’s nominees, all of whom are also nominated for performance awards in their respective genres, are several industry legends.

Perhaps the most divisive rivalry – in this category, as well as several others – will be between Adele and Beyoncé, who once again compete against each other for several awards. In this category, Adele’s “Easy On Me”, a critically acclaimed ballad and the first single from her latest album “30”, pits against Beyoncé’s “BREAK MY SOUL” dance anthem from “Renaissance”, which was met with equally widespread acclaim.

This is the ninth time Beyoncé has been nominated in this category, which is an absolute record even though she has never won before. Adele, a two-time winner and the only nominee this year to have already won the record of the year prize, would join Paul Simon and Bruno Mars in the most wins in category history if she were to win a third time this Sunday.

Several more nominees for the Record of the Year award also have a chance to win. Contenders are: “Don’t Shut Me Down” by ABBA, “Good Morning Gorgeous” by Mary J. Blige, “You And Me On The Rock” by Brandy Carlyle featuring Lucius, “Woman” by Doja Cat, “Babit Habit”. ” Steve Lacy, “The Heart Part 5” by Kendrick Lamar, “About Damn Time” by Lizzo and “As It Was” by Harry Styles.

Along with “Easy on Me” and “BREAK MY SOUL”, a number of other nominated records were commercial hits, including “Bad Habit”, “About Damn Time”, “As It Was” and “Woman” in the same rankings. in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. rolling stone placed Lacey’s “Bad Habit” at number 3 on its Top 100 Songs of 2022 list.

Carlisle, Lamar and Dodge Cat have already been nominated twice in this category, while ABBA, thanks to their long-awaited comeback after four decades, Blige and Lizzo have been nominated once each in past award seasons. Lucius, Lacey and Styles are nominated for their first ever Record of the Year award.

Album of the Year

Album of the Year – an award given to artists, featured artists and songwriters of new material, as well as producers, sound engineers, mixers and mastering engineers – will be selected from a pool of potential opportunities that is almost identical to the nominations for Record of the Year.

The nominees in this category are: ABBA’s “Voyage”, Adele’s “30”, Bad Bunny’s “Un Verano Sin Ti”, Beyoncé’s “RENAISSANCE”, Mary J. Blige’s “Good Morning Gorgeous (Deluxe)”, Brandi’s “In These Silent Days” Carlisle, “Music Of The Spheres” Coldplay, “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” by Kendrick Lamar, “Special” by Lizzo and “Harry’s House” by Harry Styles.

Many of this year’s Album of the Year nominees have received previous nominations in the same category – Beyoncé’s fourth nomination, Adele and Coldplay’s third, and Carlisle and Lizzo’s second. But Adele, who won this award for her last two studio albums 21 and 25, is the only contender for this award earlier.

She famously won Album of the Year for “25” against Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” in 2017, a decision that sparked some public backlash and accusations of bias against the Recording Academy. Even Adele seemed to disagree with the decision, saying in her acceptance speech, “The artist of my life is Beyoncé. Lemonade was so monumental, Beyoncé, and so well thought out and so beautiful and soulful, and we all got to see a different side of you… I love you, and always have, and always will.”

Making history in the fight for the 2023 album is Bad Bunny, whose languishing fourth studio album “Un Verano Sin Ti” is a sensation and critical success, topping the Billboard 200 for 13 consecutive weeks, and whose hit single “Titi Me Preguntó tops Rolling Stone’s Best of 2022 collection – the first Spanish-language album ever to be nominated for this Grammy award.

Song of the year

The Song of the Year award is given to songwriters for singles or tracks that were either released or first came to prominence during the specified Grammy eligibility period.

This year’s contenders are: Gail’s “abcdefu”, Lizzo’s “About Damn Time”, Taylor Swift’s “It’s All Too Good (10 Minute Version) (Short Film), Harry Styles’ The Way It Was, Bad Habit”. “Steve Lacy, “BREAK MY SOUL” by Beyonce, “Easy On Me” by Adele, “GOD DID” by DJ Khaled featuring Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend and Fridayy, “The Heart Part 5” by Kendrick Lamar and “Just Like That” by Bonnie Wright.

So far, Swift has been nominated six times for Song of the Year, although she has never won a Grammy in that particular category. Adele, meanwhile, has won twice – for “Rolling in the Deep” with “21” and “Hello” with “25” – but like her acceptance speech for Album of the Year in 2017, the artist dedicated her performance after winning in song. of the year for “Hi” Beyoncé, which was nominated for “Shaping”.

Beyoncé last won Song of the Year in 2010 for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)”.

Best New Artist

The coveted Grammy Award for Best New Artist is given each year to one artist whose music has “created a breakthrough in the public consciousness and markedly impacted the musical landscape” during a given season’s eligible period, according to the Recording Academy. This is a prize often awarded for advancing a relative newcomer to superstardom, with past winners including Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Adele, Sam Smith, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and Megan T Stallion.

For the first time since 2017, none of the Grammy Award nominees in the Best New Artist category received nominations in the other four major categories.

The nominees for Best New Artist are: Anitta, Omar Apollo, DOMi & JD Beck, Mooney Long, Samara Joy, Latto, Moneskin, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle and Wet Leg.

Several contenders also compete in the best album categories: Wet Leg’s “Wet Let” is nominated for Best Alternative Music Album; Tuttle’s “Crooked Tree” nominated for Best Bluegrass Album; “Linger Awhile” Joy nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album; and “Not Tight” by DOMi & JD Beck, nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album.

“Big Energy” Latto, the rapper’s hit single from her album 777, was also independently nominated in the Grammy category for Best Melodic Rap Performance. The hit track’s outstanding chart success sets Latto apart from her top new artist competitors, when only two female rappers, Lauryn Hill and Megan Thee Stallion, have previously won this category.
