GOP-led House committee to hold hearing on Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan

The House Foreign Relations Committee will hold its first hearing on Wednesday morning over what Republicans are calling the Biden administration’s “stunning failure” to pull troops out of Afghanistan.

The group, led by Rep. Michael McCall (R-Texas), will focus on the role of commander-in-chief during the chaotic days of August 2021, when the US military abruptly left Afghanistan, allowing the Taliban to quickly take control of the capital Kabul.

The administration then undertook a haphazard evacuation of U.S. citizens and Afghans from the war-torn country, resulting in a suicide attack that killed 13 U.S. service members and 170 civilians as the military attempted to maintain control over Hamid Karzai. International Airport.

While some 85,000 Afghans were able to leave the country, thousands more, including US citizens and Afghans who supported the US during its two decades of war, were left behind.

Now under Taliban rule, Afghanistan has turned into an economic disaster with rampant food shortages, and the country has returned to its former oppressive treatment of women and girls.

McCall said Wednesday’s hearing will focus on the catastrophic evacuation as the administration rushed to meet an August deadline to leave the country.

“What happened in Afghanistan was a systemic collapse of the federal government at all levels and a stunning failure of the leadership of the Biden administration. As a result, the world has witnessed the heartbreaking scenes that unfolded in and around the Kabul airport,” McCall said in an interview. The Hill statement.

“I want every member of the gold and blue star family and every veteran watching this hearing to know that I will not rest until we figure out how this happened and bring those responsible to justice,” he said.

Republican Committee Assistant told Fox News Digital that the hearing will not only serve as a “scene-setter” but also a reminder of why the withdrawal investigation is so important and allow veterans to describe their experiences on the ground during the evacuation.

It feels like the federal government has “shrugged off the trauma it caused,” the aide said, sweeping the surgery under the carpet.

Witnesses include: former army specialist Aidan Gunderson, who was at the Kabul airport during the evacuation; Sergeant Tyler Vargas-Andrews, a Marine seriously injured in a suicide bombing; Francis K. Hoang, executive chairman of Allied Airlift 21, which maintains a register of Afghans wishing to evacuate; Peter Lucier, Team America Relief spokesperson; and retired Lieutenant Colonel David Scott Mann, founder of Task Force Pineapple, a volunteer group working to evacuate US citizens and Afghans.
