Go Forward and Take Action Against Allergies

Dr. Kara Wada, an allergy and immunology expert at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, said if the winter is over, it’s too late.

COLUMBUS, Ohio. The key to dealing with spring allergies is getting ahead of them. Medical experts point out that already rising tree pollen levels are proof that you should start getting ready now.

Dr. Kara Wada, an allergy and immunology expert at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, said if the winter is over, it’s too late.

“It’s much easier to keep horses in a stable to keep inflammation under control than it is to try to replenish it after your symptoms really flare up,” she said.

Dr. Wada proposed a three-pronged strategy for dealing with allergies, minimizing exposure to allergens.

  1. You can talk to your healthcare provider about allergy testing so you know exactly what to avoid.
  2. The second element of the strategy is the use of long-acting antihistamines with less sedative effects.
  3. Immunotherapy is the third element of Dr. Wada’s three-pronged approach.

“Essentially, we give patients a personalized formulation of what they are allergic to, in small but increasing amounts, to shift the immune response over time from fighting that pollen, house dust mite dander, to ignoring it,” she said.

A few words about nasal sprays, which many people find useful for relieving nasal congestion. Technique is critical to using them effectively, start by pointing your nose towards your toes. The goal is for the excess medicine to come forward rather than down the throat. “We want to point the nozzle at our ear from the same direction,” Dr. Wada advised. “The tissues we’re really aiming to hit are closer to our cheeks, not the middle of our nose.”
