Girls’ high school basketball team banned from playing because they refused to play against a team with a transgender player

A Vermont Christian high school was banned from a girls’ basketball game because the opposing team had a transgender player, according to the school’s principal.

Middle Vermont Christian School in Junction was scheduled to play Long Trail School in Dorset on February 21, but the game never took place.

Vicki Fogg, head of Middle Vermont Christian School, said the team chose not to participate “because we believe playing against a biological male opponent compromises the integrity of the game and the safety of our players.”

Long Trail did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

For years, there has been a heated debate over the inclusion of transgender athletes in some states such as Florida, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Texas that ban transgender youth from competing in athletics. In Vermont, students are allowed to participate in “VPA activities consistent with their gender identity,” according to the Vermont Principal’s Association, the state’s governing body for high school sports.

In an October 5 letter, the association said that supporting transgender athletes is “an essential part of building an inclusive community for every student to grow and prosper.”
