Georgia police officer arrested on suspicion of covering up death of missing 16-year-old girl
An Atlanta police officer has been charged with covering up the death of a teenager who went missing last summer.
Former Doraville officer Miles Bryant, 22, has been charged with falsely reporting a crime and covering up the death of 16-year-old Susana Morales. In a statement to The Independent, the Gwinnett County Police Department said detectives had found good enough reason for the arrest on Monday, but noted that the investigation was still ongoing.
Susana’s remains were found near a highway in eastern Gwinnett County on February 6. She went missing on July 26 while returning home in Norcross.
Since then, Mr. Bryant has been fired from the Doraville Police Department and is being held at the Gwinnett Detention Center without bail. Doraville police said they are actively cooperating with Gwinnett County investigators.
“Our prayers go out to the family and friends of Susana Morales and all those affected by this tragedy,” the department said in a statement.
It is not clear how Mr. Bryant is connected to the teenager’s death.
The Gwinnett County Police Department said it is continuing to investigate the circumstances and cause of Susana’s death.
She wrote to her mother that she was on her way home shortly before her disappearance last summer.
Footage recovered by investigators shows her walking in the direction of her home, but it is speculated that she may have gotten into the car.
Her phone also pinged from Windscape Village Lane to her home near Singleton Road in Norcross.
Susana’s remains were discovered after a passer-by saw the body in the woods and contacted the police. The remains were identified on 8 February.
Authorities have asked anyone with information to call detectives at 770-513-5300 or send anonymous tips to the Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta website.
