General likely right that US and China will go to war over Taiwan by 2025: Rep. McCall

The head of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Sunday reluctantly agreed with an Air Force general’s prediction that the United States would go to war with China in 2025 over Taiwan.

Rep. Michael McCall (R-Tex.), appearing on Sunday’s Fox News program, weighed in on four-star Gen. Mike Minihan’s grim warning. after NBC News report In a memo to officers Friday, Minihan wrote that while he hoped he was wrong, “my gut tells me we will be fighting in 2025.”

“I hope he’s wrong too.” McCall said. But I think he’s right, unfortunately.

The Republican added that war is more likely if President Biden is in power and “demonstrates weakness.”

McCall explained that China is eyeing “reunification” with neighboring Taiwan and could achieve that goal by influencing Taiwan’s 2024 elections.

According to him, if this fails, hostilities may begin.

“In my opinion, they are going to consider a military invasion,” McCall told Fox of China. “We must be ready for this.

“I think as long as Biden is in power, showing weakness, as he did in Afghanistan, which led to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the chances are very high that we can see conflict with China, Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region,” he said. McCall.

The Ministry of Defense downplayed Minikhan’s memo, noting that “these comments do not reflect the ministry’s view of China.”

The Democrat, who is a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, disagreed with Minihan and McCall’s forecast for the fighting.

“Anything is possible, but I get very worried when someone starts talking about the inevitability of war with China,” Rep. Adam Smith (D-Washington) said on the Fox program. “And I want to be perfectly clear that not only is this not inevitable, but it is extremely unlikely.”

Smith said the generals should be careful in their comments about China.

“I don’t think we should be telling the world that we’re going to war with China because we’re not,” Smith said.

“We have interests, we must be able to contain China. War is not inevitable. This is a very dangerous situation for which we must be prepared, but I am fully confident that we can avoid this conflict if we choose the right approach.”
