Gambling Awareness Month continues as Ohio reports $1.1 billion in sports betting in January.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission reported that more than $1.1 billion was wagered on sports betting in January.

CLEVELAND. As Ohio reported the first results of sports betting legalization in January, a gambling awareness campaign kicks off in March.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission reported that more than $1.1 billion was wagered in January.

“Gambling for most people is a fun and responsible pastime,” said Michael Buzzelli of the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio. “But there are people who are negatively and seriously negatively impacted by it.”

JACK Casino in downtown Cleveland ranked second in personal bets, totaling over $3.5 million. The Ohio Casino Control Commission reports that the vast majority of sports betting has been placed online or through a mobile app.

“Phone calls have skyrocketed,” Buzzelli said.

In January, Ohio’s Troubled Gambling Network received three times as many phone calls to its helpline as it had a month earlier.

The legalization of sports gambling has brought Ohio over $200 million, but Jessica Franks and the Ohio Casino Control Commission continue to push for responsible gambling.

“We have a pause before playing a campaign that encourages people to set limits,” Franks said.

There are 16 mobile sports betting operators in Ohio, and most of them allow you to limit how long you watch the app and how much you can bet.

“If you’re excited, if you’re anxious, if you’re feeling stressed instead of being engrossed and excited about the game, that could be a sign that the game has gone too far,” Buzzelli said.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission told 3News that they will release sports betting-related earnings reports at the end of each month.
