Former Twitter executives to testify about Hunter Biden’s laptop story in front of House panel

Next month, former Twitter executives are due to testify before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee about the social media platform’s decisions related to a 2020 news story about President Biden’s son Hunter Biden.

Republicans have alleged that Twitter suppressed the circulation of a 2020 New York Post article about Hunter Biden weeks before the presidential election in which current President Biden was a candidate for political reasons.

“Our first hearing will take place next week. We’re going to talk to the people at Twitter because I think there are a lot of misconceptions about the laptop. And we’re going to talk about this laptop,” said James Comer (R-Kentucky), head of oversight, in his speech at the National Press Club’s headlining newsmaker. speak on Monday.

A recently GOP-controlled watchdog group is planning to investigate the Biden family on a number of issues, and Hunter Biden’s business connections have long been a Republican focus.

“…We are investigating the Biden family for influence peddling. We want to make sure our national security is not compromised… Maybe there is nothing there. We’ll see, Comer said.

The New York Post article included allegations about Joe Biden and Ukraine that were based on information allegedly obtained from the hard drive of a laptop that Hunter Biden allegedly left at a computer repair shop in Delaware.

Twitter was among the platforms that briefly banned users from sharing links to this story, citing a violation of their hacked content policy.

Concerns were also raised about possible Russian disinformation after proof The Kremlin interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

The Chairman of the Oversight on Monday suggested that the FBI ordered Twitter to suppress the story for political reasons. no public evidence supported this assertion.

“Who said that opinion doesn’t change, and then a Republican president comes to you and they’re far right and they force government officials to come in and then crack down on liberal free speech, crack down on MSNBC, crack down on the Associated Press, whoever,” he said. Comer, though admitted that if the authorities are “genuinely” concerned about the misinformation in the article, “then it’s a different story.”

Rep. Lauren Bobert (R-Colo.) confirmed On Monday, three former Twitter employees are due to testify at a Feb. 8 hearing.

“Responsibility begins,” Bobert said.

Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jim Jordan (Ohio), were also active in helping the Oversight Service investigate whether Twitter censored a New York Post article.

House Republicans in both groups are also looking into the recent discovery of several classified documents from Biden’s time as vice president and senator found in his Delaware home and old office.

Comer earlier this month sidestepped why the Oversight was not investigating former President Trump on the same issue after more than 300 classified documents were found in an FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago home last year.

Comer met with Twitter CEO Elon Musk last week at the Capitol, but did not reveal any details or discussion topics of the meeting.
