Former NBA star Shawn Kemp arrested after drive-by shooting; Officials say there will be no charges immediately.

Former NBA star Shawn Kemp was arrested after a drive-by shooting in Seattle, and authorities said Thursday he would be released without immediate charges.

Kemp was jailed in the Pierce County Jail shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday on charges of drive-by shooting, county records showed.

By Thursday afternoon, Pierce County prison records showed that Kemp, a six-time NBA All-Star, was due to be released by 9 p.m. Thursday.

Kemp will not face criminal charges Thursday pending “further investigation” by Tacoma police, said Adam Faber, a spokesman for the Pierce County Attorney’s Office.

Police respond to reports of shooting at Tacoma Mall in an altercation between occupants of two vehicles shortly before 2 p.m. local time, police said.

One of the drivers fired several shots at the occupants of the other car before the “victim car” fled, police said.

They said the suspect, whom they identified as a 53-year-old man, was taken into custody without incident and sent to a local prison. According to them, firearms were confiscated from the scene.

In another video, a man in red appears to raise his hand before a gunshot-like sound is heard.

Kemp is a former star player for the Seattle SuperSonics, now the Oklahoma City Thunder. He was selected 17th overall in the 1989 NBA draft and spent 14 seasons in the league.

Kemp also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Orlando Magic.
