Five people, including two children, died in a house fire in New York

Authorities said five people, including two children, were killed in a home fire in Spring Valley, New York, early Saturday morning.

“We have a tragedy on our hands,” Rockland County Executive Ed Day said at a press conference, giving details of the fire.

At 4:03 a.m., several 911 calls reported a fire at a semi-detached house at 118 Lake Street. According to Rockland, firefighters and police arrived at the wooden structure and found the house engulfed in flames and reported a large number of people locked in inside. County Fire Coordinator Christopher Keir.

“There were numerous attempts and numerous attempts to get into the building, but the conditions were bad and it was not possible,” Kir said.

Authorities said the fire was under control by 4:40 a.m., but they were unable to save the people inside. The bodies of the victims were found on different floors of the dwelling; three victims were found on the second floor, and two were found on the first level.

“We believe that the victims were found on the first floor due to the collapse of the second floor,” Cyrus said. The fire destroyed the structure of the house.

The names and ages of the victims are expected to be released before families are properly notified, authorities said.

A firefighter was injured and was treated on the spot. Five more people were injured in the fire and were taken to local hospitals, authorities said.

According to Cyrus, one person, a man, jumped out of a back window on the second floor.

Authorities said the current condition of the five wounded is unknown and it is not known which hospitals they were taken to. It is not yet clear how many people were living in the house at the time of the fire, authorities said.

According to Day, there was a breach at the house in 2021 due to a lack of smoke detectors, but the breach was subsequently fixed.

Police are investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

“The investigation is in its infancy,” Spring Valley Police Chief Rick Oleshchuk said.
