First inmate arrested after five escaped from Missouri jail

The St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department said Friday that one of five Missouri prison inmates who escaped this week through the building’s ventilation and plumbing system has been caught.

Michael Wilkins was arrested in Poplar Bluff, about 70 miles south of the Farmington detention center they fled from, the sheriff’s department said in a statement.

The U.S. Marshals Service said Wilkins was being held on charges of second-degree burglary and violating probation.

Wilkins and four other men escaped on Tuesday evening, officials said.

They are believed to have gained access to the jail’s rooftop through a “plumbing chase,” which is a space in a building that contains plumbing and other pipes, and then descended to the ground, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the men managed to enter a secure cell and forced down the door to the jail around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday as they made their way to the roof of the building.

According to the department, they were seen on video stealing a 2009 Toyota Scion from a nearby facility.

The St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that Wilkins has been returned to a detention center and is being held without bail.
