Feds are investigating Tesla over complaints that the steering wheel falls off while driving

US auto safety regulators have launched an investigation into the Tesla Model Y SUV after receiving two complaints that the steering wheel could come off while driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the investigation covers roughly 120,000 2023 model year vehicles.

The agency says that in both cases, the Model Y was delivered to customers with a missing bolt that secures the wheel to the steering column. The friction landing held the steering wheels, but they separated when force was applied while the SUVs were moving.

The agency says in documents posted on its website on Wednesday that both incidents occurred when the SUVs had low mileage.

Investigators are looking into how often the problem occurs, how many vehicles were affected, and Tesla’s manufacturing process. The Model Y is Tesla’s best-selling vehicle.

Messages were left asking for comment on Tesla, which has dissolved its media relations department.

In one complaint filed with the NHTSA, the owner said he was driving with his family on Highway 1 in Woodbridge, New Jersey when the steering wheel suddenly came off on January 29. The owner wrote that there were no cars behind him, and he was able to drive up to the median. In Tesla, bought on January 24, no one was hurt.

The complaint includes a link to the owner’s Twitter post, which includes a video of the steering wheel torn off and photos of the white Tesla being towed.

Tesla’s service center first gave the owner a $103.96 cost estimate to fix the problem. The service center apologized in text messages posted on Twitter.

When the owner wrote that he lost faith in Tesla and asked for a refund, the service center withdrew the fee and wrote that Tesla did not have a return policy, but he could contact the sales and shipping department.
