Experts warn of the dangers of sports betting as Ohio looks to legalize the practice.

Sunday has the most games in Ohio, but pundits are concerned about betting opportunities.

CLEVELAND — Sunday marks the biggest gambling craze in Ohio history, but addiction experts are concerned that the ability to bet on sports could negatively impact Ohioans.

“It’s in our hands,” said Michael Buzzelli, deputy director of the Ohio State’s Problem Gambling Network. “People will get hurt.”

Buzzelli and Dr. Trent Hall of The Ohio State University told 3News they are concerned about how affordable sports betting will be in Ohio.

On Sunday, more than 750 retail outlets across the state will have sports betting kiosks inside their businesses. There will also be 16 mobile or online operators, as well as 12 retail bookmakers, to enable Ohio residents to bet 24/7.

“For gaming disorder, we really think the biggest risk factor is affordability,” Hall explained, “and that’s something that worries us as addiction treatment providers.”

Ohio has some of the best drug treatment providers in the region, and Buckeye employs 50 professionals, according to Buzzelli.

“We feel we are ready,” Buzzelli said. “Over the past year, we have doubled the number of addiction counselors in the state who are approved or specialize in the treatment of gambling addiction.”

Baselli told 3News that gambling addiction has unique characteristics. Some of the signs to watch out for are irritability, anxiety, mood swings, and a desire to borrow money.

“Those who have problems with sports betting will develop them faster because it is so quick and easy to place a bet,” Buzzelli added. “You may be losing track of how much and how often you bet.”

The Ohio Problem Gambling Network offers resources if you have a gambling problem.
