Eric Adams says migrants are being given a ‘false idea’ of what to expect in New York

EL PASO, TEXAS. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said migrants should be warned that there is “no more room for them in the Big Apple” and urged the federal government to step up coordination in response to this “national emergency.”

Adams spoke in El Paso after checking conditions in the Texas border town. The mayor has criticized federal leaders for not helping cities across the country take in dozens of migrants.

He said he learned on Sunday that the websites were giving asylum seekers a “false impression” of what to expect in New York, including that they would be staying in hotels when in fact In fact, it will be housing in a shelter.

“We found out today, which was very informative and that’s why it was important to come here, that there are websites that advertise New York… basically the streets are paved with gold. That there is automatic work, that you will automatically live in a hotel,” Adams said.

“There is a conversation between asylum seekers and migrants who have the false impression that if you come to New York, everything is fine. We need to give people accurate information.

“And that’s what some of the centers are doing here. They really explain to people that this is exactly what is happening in New York right now. In New York you will go there, you will live in crowded conditions, that there is no place in New York anymore. This should be coordinated by our national government.”

Adams, who was accompanied by El Paso Mayor Oscar Lizer, said he would like the Federal Emergency Management Agency to appoint a leader to coordinate cities’ responses as large numbers of migrants arrive on their doorsteps.

“It’s not right that El Paso has an answer, New York has an answer, we can’t have these disparate answers,” Adams said. “We need to have a coordinated response, and that’s where FEMA needs to help.”

“This is a national emergency and a crisis that needs to be addressed,” he said, urging Congress and the president to push through immigration reform.

Adams arrived in El Paso on Saturday evening and, along with Leeser and other officials, toured various parts of the area. Some migrants told The Post they wanted Adams to take them back to the Big Apple.

When asked about the timing of his trip, which came a few months after Gotham began taking in huge numbers of migrants and a week after President Biden visited the border, Adams insisted that members of his team at City Hall were in El -Paso. Several months ago.

Lizer said Adams told him in September that the city would welcome migrants bussed from El Paso to New York. The Texas Democrat also said at a public meeting that he spoke with Adams about his decision to send a group of senior advisers from New York to El Paso on a fact-finding mission.

During Sunday’s press conference, Adams said that cities that receive a lot of migrants, such as New York, El Paso, Washington, Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles, do not deserve to take on this burden.

“Our cities are being bombed,” Adams said. And we didn’t deserve it. Migrants don’t deserve it, and people living in cities don’t deserve it. We expect more from our national leaders to truly address this issue.”

There are 26,000 migrants in New York’s care, Adams said, and about 3,100 migrants have arrived in the past week and a half. He noted that the services provided have a wide range.

He said he plans to address the issue among cities at the US Conference of Mayors in Washington this week, including those that are already accepting migrants and those that are not yet.

“Because today it’s El Paso,” Adams said. “Tomorrow it could be their cities.”
