EPA Region 7 Encourages Radon Testing During National Radon Action Month

Free radon testing kits will be offered during events throughout January at Kansas City Public Library branches in Missouri.

LENEKS, CAN. (January 4, 2023) – In January, EPA Region 7 will host six outreach events at Kansas City Public Library, Missouri, branches to raise awareness of radon exposure and encourage residents to test their homes for radon. January marks National Radon Action Month.

Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas that cannot be seen or smelled, is the leading cause of lung cancer death among non-smokers in the US and is responsible for about 21,000 deaths in the US each year. Jackson County, Missouri is in EPA radon zone 1, which means homes in the county have the highest potential for testing above the EPA’s recommended radon levels.

“We urge everyone, especially those who live in EPA-designated radon zone 1 areas, to protect their health and their loved ones by checking their homes for radon gas, a leading cause of lung cancer in non-smoking Americans,” the statement said. . EPA Region 7 Administrator Meg McCollister.

Region 7 EPA staff will be available at the following Kansas City Public Library locations to discuss the dangers of radon, encourage radon testing, and offer free radon testing kits (stocks allow):

  • Thursday, January 122:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at Trails West Branch, 11401 East 23rd St. S, Independence, MO 64052
  • Saturday, January 21noon to 4:00 pm, Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St., Kansas City, MO 64112
  • Tuesday, January 2411:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Southeast Branch, 6242 Swope Pkwy., Kansas City, MO 64130.
  • Saturday, January 28from noon to 4:00 pm, at Waldo Branch, 201 E. 75th Street, Kansas City, MO 64114
  • Tuesday, January 3111:00 am to 3:00 pm, at the Westport Branch, 118 Westport Road, Kansas City, MO 64111.

Radon test kits can also be found online or in home improvement stores. The National Radon Program Service at Kansas State University offers test kits for purchase online.

Background

Most homes in EPA Region 7 are located in areas designated EPA Radon Zone 1 or 2, indicating a high to moderate potential for elevated radon levels. EPA Region 7 covers Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and nine tribal peoples.

The EPA Radon Map was developed in 1993 to identify areas of the United States with the highest potential for elevated indoor radon levels based on indoor radon measurements, geology, airborne radioactivity, soil parameters, and foundation types.
