EPA Awards $70,675 to Montana’s Chippewa Cree Tribe for Solid Waste Management

Improved solid waste management on the Rocky Boys Indian Reservation will increase recovery of valuable materials, educate the public, and reduce illegal dumping.

Rocky Boys Indian Reservation, Montana: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provided $70,675 to the Chippewa Cree for capacity building and public education about solid waste management practices on the Rocky Boys Indian Reservation in northern Montana. The Chippewa Cree Water Resources Department (TWRD) will use EPA funds to review its solid waste management plan, improve material collection and handling, and educate the public on best practices for waste and recyclables.

“These EPA funds will help the Chippewa Cree improve solid waste management and recycling on the Rocky Boys Reservation.” EPA regional administrator KC Becker said. “We are proud to support the tribe in developing a waste system that is affordable, safe, healthy and sustainable for all members of the community.”

Once funded, TWRD will begin by examining the characteristics of waste materials disposed of both legally and illegally at transfer stations throughout the year. Using this data, TWRD will then update its comprehensive solid waste management plan and educate local contractors and the public on proper solid waste disposal practices to improve the safe management of waste and the recovery of recyclable materials in the reservation’s communities.

“This grant will take the Chippewa Cree solid waste program to the next level and provide better services to the community,” TWRD director Ted Whitford said.

The Chippewa Cree tribe is one of the of seven laureates nationwide this year receive a total of about $700,000 to improve tribal solid waste management. EPA Tribal Solid Waste Grant The program is designed to help tribes implement solid waste management activities that create and strengthen sustainable waste management programs.
