Elaine Chao, Trump-era Transportation Secretary and wife of Mitch McConnell, is hitting back at Trump for giving her the racist nickname “Coco Chow.”

  • Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao spoke out against Trump’s attacks on her.
  • Trump on Monday again referred to Chao as “Coco Chow” in a Truth Social post.
  • Chao said the racist moniker says more about Trump “than it will ever say about Asian Americans.”

Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao hit back at former President Donald Trump, who has been posting racist denunciations of her on social media for months.

In a statement to Politico on Wednesday, Chao, who spent four years in Trump’s cabinet, expressed her displeasure at his derogatory nickname for her.

“When I was young, some people deliberately misspelled or mispronounced my name,” the statement said. “Asian Americans have worked hard to change this experience for the next generation.”

“He doesn’t seem to get it, which says a lot more about him than he ever does about Asian Americans,” Chao added.

Chao released her statement after Trump, in a Truth Social post on Monday, referred to her again by her nickname “Coco Chow.”

“Does Coco Chow have anything to do with Joe Biden’s secret documents being sent and stored in Chinatown?” He wrote. “Her husband, Old Broken Raven, is VERY close to Biden, the Democrats and of course China.”

Chao is married to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump has repeatedly claimed without any basis that Chao and McConnell are compromised by their ties to China. Trump also called Chao “crazy” and called her McConnell’s “China-loving wife”.

Chao has so far avoided directly responding to Trump.

“He’s trying to piss us off. He says all sorts of outrageous things and I’m not going to answer any of them,” she told CNN in December. Earlier, McConnell said that he could not answer Trump, who called his wife crazy.

It’s unclear why Chao – among all the wives of Trump’s political opponents – was such a magnet for the former president’s wrath, but Chao was the first member of the Trump cabinet to resign after the Capitol riot.

When Trump’s press secretary Stephen Cheng was approached for comment about Chao, he told Politico, “People need to stop feigning outrage and getting into arguments that only exist in their heads.”

Chung also echoed Trump’s rhetoric about Chao.

“What’s really troubling is her family’s highly troubling ties to communist China that undermine America’s economic and national security,” Chung told Politico.

Trump has repeatedly made racist and anti-Asian statements. In 2020, he gave COVID-19 the nickname “kung flu”. His other term for COVID-19, “Chinese virus”, is still used in far-right circles.

Trump’s press office and Chao’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
